Trip Report: My Spring Break Mileage Run Vacation to Rio de Janeiro

Originally, I was supposed to be taking a mileage run vacation to South Korea a few weeks ago, but some unexpected plans came up. That’s what happens when you try to book vacations more than six months out. It was an error on my part due to some scheduling conflicts and could have been avoided. I had to cancel my ticket and miraculously, an amazing fare popped up from Los Angeles to Rio de Janeiro on American Airlines.

The cost of my ticket came out to $776 and would net me 14,523 miles at 5.3cpm. It’s a little over 5cpm for mileage runs, but it’s not bad for a destination like Rio de Janeiro during spring break. I used a Systemwide Upgrade and cleared from LAX-JFK and JFK-GIG and I’m still waitlisted on the return. I’m excited to finally be flying on the Airbus A321T from LAX-JFK which I reviewed back in December of last year. Last year, I took a mileage run vacation to Rio de Janeiro and stayed there for only 34 hours. I did a lot as you can read from my past trip report, but this time I will be spending two nights and three days in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I am planning on visiting different neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro this weekend and staying at a different hotel this time in Barra de Tijuca.

As usual, I’ll be taking a lot of pictures and posting them on my social media accounts. Be sure to follow me on Instagram and Twitter for live updates!
