How to Get From Guarulhos Airport to Sao Paulo via Public Transit

There are several ways to get from Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) to Sao Paulo City Center. First off, you can take a really expensive taxi for 150-170 Brazilian Reais ~ $56-$64 USD or take an Airport Bus Service for $18 USD. The least inexpensive way is to take a public bus from GRU Airport to Tatuape Metro Station where you can go anywhere in the city for R$7.00~ $2.64 USD.

Here’s How to Get From Guarulhos Airport to Sao Paulo via Public Transit:

Step 1: Go outside the Arrivals Hall at Sao Paulo International Airport (GRU Airport) and find a public transportation bus with the direction ‘Metro Tatuape’. Buy a bus ticket from the driver for 3.50 Reais ~ $1.32 USD.

Step 2: It will take approximately 30 minutes (with no traffic and two stops at other terminals) to reach the Tatuape Metro Station from Guarulhos Airport.

Step 3: Once the bus fully stops at Tatuape (final destination), hop off the bus and follow signs to the Tatuape Metro Station (Blue line).

Step 4: Buy a single journey metro subway ticket from the ticket booth cashier or ticket machine for 3.50 Brasilian Reais ~ $1.32 USD.

Step 5: Make sure you’re going the right direction by studying the Sao Paulo Metro Map beforehand!

For example, from Estação Tatuapé to Estação Paulista, it would require a change at Estação Republica and the journey would take approximately 37 minutes by subway. In total from GRU Airport to Paulista Metro Station, the entire journey would take 1 hour and 7 minutes which is (in many cases) better than taking a taxi in the infamous Sao Paulo traffic!

  1. hi Jamison,
how bad is the traffic in sao paolo? if I want to take a taxi from the airport to republica metro, how long does it take travelling after 1pm?
    thanks.
    Daisy

    • The traffic in Sao Paulo is pretty bad during morning rush hour traffic Monday-Friday between the hours of 7am – 10am. Also, the after work rush hour M-F from 4pm-7pm traffic is insane as well. There’s basically no traffic during the weekends (Sat, Sun) and Holidays and after 8pm on weekdays. A taxi from GRU airport to Republica station should be 35 minutes without traffic. Please let me know if you have any other questions Daisy!

  2. Hello. Do I need exact change when I buy a ticket from the bus driver? And when I buy a ticket at Metro, do I have to validate the ticket before I enter Metro? How long is the ticket valid?

    Thank you, Pavol
