The Sights and Sounds of the World Cup Protests in Belo Horizonte

Before flying to Brazil to attend the World Cup match, I had heard all about the World Cup protests that have been ongoing ever since FIFA announced that the World Cup would be in Brazil. There were protests and violent riots in most major cities of Brazil especially Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. I had no idea I would end up in an anti-World Cup protest in Belo Horizonte.

I had an amazing time watching the Greece v. Colombia World Cup Match at Mineirao Stadium (Estádio Mineirão. After my first World Cup match, I took at taxi back to the Estoril Hotel in Downtown Belo Horizonte. What I stumbled upon were roadblocks from the Belo Horizonte military police.

There was something going on in Sete de Setembro (September 7 Square), one block away from my hotel.

There was riot police with guns everywhere blocking the streets of downtown Belo Horizonte.

I found out it was an actual anti-World Cup protest which happened right after the first World Cup match ended at Mineirao Stadium.

The protesters were mostly young student activists.

Here’s a few videos I made of the anti-World Cup protests.

It was a peaceful protest, but cops had to catch up to the protesters because they were spilling onto different streets in downtown Belo Horizonte.
