The Sights and Sounds of the Beaches of Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro has 3 main beaches in Zona Sul (South Zone) and they are Leblon, Ipanema, and Copacabana. 2 years ago, I reviewed each neighborhood thoroughly in The Sights and Sounds of Leblon in Rio de Janeiro, The Sights and Sounds of Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro, and The Sights and Sounds of Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro. This time around, I started from Ipanema Beach and walked to Copacabana Beach for FIFA Fan Fest.

After changing and dropping off my belongings at the Hospedagem Ledo Hotel in Centro Rio de Janeiro, I headed to the nearby Carioca metro station where there were a lot of vendors selling merchandise related to the World Cup.

I got onto the Rio subway and got off at General Osorio metro station in Ipanema (the last stop, pending construction of the other metro lines/stops)

I met up a local Carioca for an authentic Brazilian lunch in Ipanema and afterwards, headed to beautiful Ipanema beach.

There were a lot of vendors on the beach selling beach chairs, beach towels, and bikinis (in case you forget yours).

I walked towards Copacabana Beach because I was headed to the outdoor FIFA Fan Fest Festival.

Here’s a video I made while walking on Av. Atlantica in Copacabana:

Avenida Atlantica which runs parallel to Copacabana Beach was closed to automobiles and there was a large police presence in Rio de Janeiro.

Caiprinhas can be bought from official vendors for R$8.00 ~ $2.46 USD or from an unofficial sidewalk vendor for R$5.00 ~ $1.54 USD.

You can also get a massage beachside on Copacabana Beach.

I love this beachside Brazilian art display made from sand.

At last, I was getting closer and closer to FIFA Fan Fest at the far northern end of Copacabana Beach and I couldn’t help but notice the vast beauty of Copacabana Beach.

  1. I was once told that the black and white cobblestone sidewalk, which is world famous, is an homage to the “Meeting of the Waters” outside Manaus, where the Solimoes and Negro rivers join. The Portuguese Wikipedia page for Copacabana Beach, however, says that it’s an homage to the ocean waves, and a copy of similar designs in Lisbon and Manaus.

The beach is named for a saint’s relic that was brought from a really chill town in Bolivia, Copacabana, that’s worth visiting. It’s a better place (than Puno, Peru) for going out onto Lake Titicaca.
