Trip Report: My International First Class Vacation to Taipei, Hong Kong, and Tokyo

I’m off to Taiwan tonight and headed to a wedding next week in Taipei. After spending five days in Taipei, I will venture off to nearby Hong Kong for three days. I haven’t been to either country, so I don’t know what to expect. The weather doesn’t seem too delightful for the next week and a half in Taipei or Hong Kong because the forecast calls for rain.

I booked an economy flight from Los Angeles to Taipei on EVA Airways using 32,500 United miles. I booked a First Class flight from Hong Kong to Taipei on Cathay Pacific using 13,500 British Airways Avios. I spent 67,500 American Airlines miles on a First Class flight from Hong Kong to Japan on Cathay Pacific Airlines (My flight had an equipment swap where I was involuntary downgraded to Business Class) where I will have a short layover in Narita (My flight got severely delayed and I was forced to stay overnight in Tokyo.) Then, I will fly First Class on Japan Airlines (JAL) from Japan to Los Angeles.

This is be my first time ever flying any type of international First Class after writing a blog post last year called Why Flying International First Class Doesn’t Make Sense. Ben, from One Mile at a Time countered my post and wrote Why flying international first class does make sense and he put me up for a challenge. Well, challenge accepted!

    Do you mean JAL?

  2. Weather here in HKG .. kind of sucks: grey and rain.. so bring your umbrella!

  3. Japan to LAX on CX? Did you charter a flight or something?
