The Sights and Sounds of the Mid Levels in Hong Kong

The Mid-Levels district in Hong Kong is one of the hidden gems on Hong Kong Island. It’s nestled in the hills above Central district where many upper class locals and expats live. Think of it as a mini Manhattan since some apartments are really small, but expensive.

To access the Mid Levels district from Central district, you have to take the Central – Mid Levels escalator which is the quickest way to get up and down the hilly mountain.

The views from the Mid Levels escalator can be quite breathtaking as you can get a glimpse on how the locals go about their daily lives.

You’re not confined to one exit as there are many exits available when taking the Mid-Levels escalator up or down. As you can see, the streets are very hilly since the Mid Levels district is mountainous.

One of my favorite things to do in the Mid Levels neighborhood is to shop at the many local street markets where you can get fresh local produce.

Restaurants, sidewalk cafes, and bakeries are plentiful as well as you won’t ever go hungry in Hong Kong.

Street vendors are plentiful and one vendor even sells spare parts for plumbing!

In Hong Kong, spa and massage parlors are fronts for prostitution. Just look for the barber shop sign.

  1. I love the mid-levels! They have a different vibe depending on time of day, too.
