The Sights and Sounds of Tonghua Night Market in Taipei

When I stayed at the W Taipei Hotel, I opted to walk 25 minutes to the Tonghua Night market instead of taking an 8 minute taxi cab ride. Out of the four night markets I’ve visited in Taipei, my favorite one was the Tonghua Night Market in the Da’an district. It’s more of a hidden gem and mostly a locals only night market with tons of street food, shopping, and games.

The Tonghua Night Market is not as touristy as the Shilin night market, but it can get crowded with locals.

The main attraction of the Tonghua Night Market is the vast array of food stall vendors.

My first stop was a street food vendor selling fried squid on a stick. I haven’t had that before, so I was eager to try it and it was delicious!

My friend pressured me into trying out stinky tofu since I’ve never had it before. I’ve hesitated on trying the dish out many times because of the strong smell, but I just had to have it before leaving Taiwan. It was surprisingly good and there’s no aftertaste of the stink.

I also had other street food such as candied tomatoes and pig’s blood cake on a stick which was also delicious.

For dessert, I opted for a chilled sugar cane ice cream which was made from scratch. This was my first time ever having sugar cane ice cream and it was refreshing.

I couldn’t leave the night market without the infamous boba milk tea (pearl milk tea, tapioca milk tea). Boba vendors are practically on every street corner in Taipei and the balls are delicious to chew.

In addition to food, you can also do a little shopping at the Tonghua Night Market.

You can unwind the day by playing various carnival style games at the Tonghua Night Market.

My favorite game is where you can choose from a variety of assault weapons to try and pop the balloons to win a prize.

  1. I enjoyed all of the night markets in Taiwan, but I agree about this being the favorite. It’s also where I had stinky tofu & duck blood — the duck blood was ok, the stinky tofu was definitely not my favorite!

    Loving this Taiwan series!
